Course Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to read and analyze more advanced Ottoman Turkish texts and to develop their language analysis and interpretation skills by doing practical work on classical period literary works, official documents and different types of written texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Reads and transcribes complex and advanced texts written in Ottoman Turkish.
2   2. Analyzes the use of Arabic and Persian phrases and compound structures in the text.
3   3. Analyzes the language and style features of classical literary texts.
4   4. Evaluates official and bureaucratic documents from a historical and linguistic perspective.
5   5. Examines the word, sentence and expression structure in different types of texts written in Ottoman Turkish.
6   6. Translates and interprets selected texts into contemporary Turkish.
7   7. Analyzes the historical, cultural and social background in the texts.
