Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to provide students with the ability to examine the origins of the Turkish language, its historical development, its different periods and the language features of these periods using scientific methods. Students will be able to follow the important changes in the process from Proto-Turkic to today's written Turkish languages in different linguistic areas, from phonetics to syntax, from vocabulary to writing systems. In addition, they will understand the relations of the Turkish language with other languages, the emergence and development of different Turkish dialects, and gain the competence to read and evaluate historical texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Evaluate the place of the Turkish language in the Altai language family and different views on this subject.
2   2. Explain the Proto-Turkic period and the language features of this period.
3   3. Will be able to recognize the basic grammatical features of the Old Turkish period (Köktürk, Uyghur texts).
4   4. Will be able to state the language features and important works of the Karakhanid Turkish period.
5   5. Will be able to evaluate the language features and literary products of the Khwarezm Turkish period.
6   6. Compare the formation processes and basic features of Western Turkish branches such as Kipchak Turkish and Oghuz Turkish.
7   7. Will be able to distinguish the historical development, periods and linguistic features of Ottoman Turkish.
8   8. Explain the changes in Turkey Turkish throughout the historical process and its characteristics in the modern period.
