Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to develop students' reading and understanding skills of Ottoman Turkish texts in different writing styles (divani, rika, siyakat, etc.), to increase their reading and analysis competencies on literary texts (divan poetry, mesnevi, prose) and historical documents (edicts, land registers, etc.), to enable them to make grammatical and lexical analysis of texts, and to help them gain information about Ottoman culture and history through texts.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Will be able to recognize different script types of Ottoman Turkish (divani, rika, siyakat, kırmak etc.) and read texts in these script types.
2   2. Will be able to read texts of Divan poetry in different verse forms (ghazal, ode, masnavi, etc.) and analyze them at a basic level.
3   3. Will be able to read and understand prose texts from the Ottoman period (history, anthologies, travel books, etc.).
4   4. Will be able to read historical documents (edicts, warrants, title deeds, etc.) belonging to the Ottoman Empire and extract their basic information.
5   5. Recognize Arabic and Persian words and phrases in Ottoman Turkish texts and infer their meanings in context.
6   6. Will be able to analyze the grammatical structures (verb conjugations, noun phrases, adjective phrases, etc.) of Ottoman Turkish texts.
7   7. Will be able to translate Ottoman Turkish texts into contemporary Turkish accurately and meaningfully.
8   8. They will be able to learn about the culture, history and literature of the Ottoman period through the texts they read.

The success of the student is determined by the midterm and final exam grades. Apart from this, there are no special evaluation criteria.
