Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the literary movements (Fecr-i Ati) that emerged after the dissolution of Servet-i Fünun in the New Turkish Literature, the characteristics of the National Literature Period, its important artists and works, and to enable them to understand the historical, social and cultural context of this period. In addition, the literary trends of the early years of the Republic will be introduced, and the continuity and changes in the modernization process of New Turkish Literature will be comprehended. It is aimed for students to develop their skills in analyzing and interpreting literary texts from this period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Explain the reasons for the dissolution of Servet-i Fünun and the literary environment that followed.
2   2. Will be able to evaluate the literary understanding of the Fecr-i Ati community, its important representatives and the characteristics of their works.
3   3. Explain the political and social factors that led to the emergence of the National Literature Period.
4   4. Will be able to evaluate the basic principles and literary understanding of the National Literature movement.
5   5. Will be able to recognize the important artists of the National Literature Period (Ömer Seyfettin, Halide Edip Adıvar, Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, Reşat Nuri Güntekin etc.) and the characteristic features of their works.
6   6. Will be able to analyze the literary genres (especially the novel and the short story) that developed in this period and important examples of these genres.
7   7. Explain the language and style features of the National Literature Period.
8   8. Will be able to have basic information about literary trends in the early years of the Republic Period.
