Course Objective

The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to the important literary movements, genres, works and artists of the New Turkish Literature from the Tanzimat Period to the end of the Servet-i Fünun Period and to enable them to understand the cultural and intellectual background of this period. Through this course, students will understand the emergence and development of Turkish literature under Western influence and the literary debates of this period. In addition, it is aimed to develop their skills in analyzing and interpreting literary texts of this period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Explain the historical and social conditions that paved the way for the beginning of New Turkish Literature.
2   2. Will be able to evaluate the literary and intellectual characteristics of the Tanzimat Period, its important artists and their works.
3   3. Explain the literary understanding of the Servet-i Fünun Period, its important representatives and the characteristic features of their works.
4   4. Will be able to recognize the important literary movements (Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Parnassianism, Symbolism) that emerged in this period and evaluate their reflections in Turkish literature.
5   5. Will be able to recognize new literary genres (novel, story, theater, criticism, article, poetry) that developed in the Tanzimat and Servet-i Fünun periods and important examples of these genres.
6   6. Explain the important literary debates and polemics of the period.
7   7. Will be able to interpret the texts of New Turkish Literature within the political, social and cultural context of the period.
8   8. Will be able to gain the ability to read literary texts from this period and analyze them at a basic level.

The success of the student is determined by the midterm and final exam grades. Apart from this, there are no special evaluation criteria.
