Course Objective

The course aims to teach basic reading and writing skills for teacher candidates and to develop their academic English skills to enable them follow literature in their respective fields. The course also aims to enable teacher candidates to transfer new developments in their fields into their own classes.

The course focuses on developing reading and writing strategies of students which are the most commonly employed language skill in academic life out of the four language skills namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. At the end of this course, the students are expected to understand English texts regarding their fields, to recognize and employ related sentence structures and vocabulary as well as to write a paragraph in academic style.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Choose the most appropriate reading strategies (exp; skimming, scanning, referencing etc.),
2   2. Employ several cognitive strategies in order to understand the text (eg; guessing the meaning, using contextual clues etc.),
3   3. Analyze footnotes and graphichs,
4   4. Recognize rhetorical clues (eg listing, compare-contrast, cause and effect etc.),
5   5. Create grammatically correct sentences,
6   6. Spell sentences correctly and use correct punctuation,
7   7. Transfer the skills that they learned into new texts,
8   8. Write a parapraph.

Reading materials will be privided by the instructor each week. The students will also be asked to bring reading materials to the class, and these texts will be analyzed in class. In addition, several Internet sites will be shared with the students.
