Course Objective

The aim of this course is to enable prospective preschool teachers to understand and apply dialogical book reading strategies that promote active participation, language development, and early literacy skills in young children through structured and effective questioning techniques

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain the concept, principles, and significance of dialogical book reading.
2   Identify and apply different prompting and questioning techniques used in dialogical reading.
3   Select developmentally appropriate books for dialogical reading sessions.
4   Plan and implement dialogical book reading sessions that encourage children's active participation
5   Support children's vocabulary development, narrative skills, and conversational abilities through dialogical reading.
6   Adapt dialogical reading techniques according to different age groups and individual needs

1 Introduction to dialogical book reading: definition, principles, and benefits.
2 Differences between traditional, interactive, and dialogical book reading.
3 PEER sequence in dialogical reading: Prompt, Evaluate, Expand, Repeat.
4 Types of prompts in dialogical reading: Completion, Recall, Open-ended, Wh-questions, Distancing.
5 Selecting developmentally appropriate books for dialogical reading.
6 Using voice, gestures, and nonverbal communication during reading
7 General review, course evaluation, midterm exam
8 Strategies to foster children's active participation and dialogue.
9 Student Applications 1: Basic dialogical reading practice.
10 Student Applications 2: Using different types of prompts.
11 Student Applications 3: Supporting vocabulary and storytelling.
12 Student Applications 4: Adapting dialogical reading for different age groups.
13 Evaluating dialogical book reading sessions.
14 General review and student reflections.
15 Final Exam
