Course Objective

The aim of this course is to equip prospective early childhood teachers with the skills to holistically observe and assess young children. Students will learn observation assessment techniques, observation methods, and ethical principles, and they will be expected to develop and apply assessment tools to evaluate children's developmental characteristics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe children's developmental characteristics across motor, social, emotional, cognitive, and language domains.
2   Explain and apply different informal assessment methods (anecdotal records, time sampling, event sampling, sociometry, etc.).
3   Understand key principles for effective and ethical observation.
4   Design and implement systematic observation forms.
5   Use child-centered assessment tools such as portfolios and product evaluations.
6   Practice observation and assessment skills through group projects and individual presentations.

4 Introduction to observation methods: Anecdotal records: Definition, features, and examples.
5 Time sampling and event sampling methods.
6 Systematic observation and designing observation forms
7 Sociometry studies and evaluating group relationships
8 General Revision, Assessment, Mid-term Exam
9 Preparing portfolios and product files.
10 Techniques for product evaluation.
11 Preparation for student presentations: How to prepare observation and assessment reports.
12 Student presentations Group 1. Classroom sharing of observation practices.
13 Student presentations Group 2. Interpreting developmental assessment results.
14 General review: A holistic perspective on understanding and assessing children. Course evaluation and student feedback.
