Course Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the fundamental processes, components, and theoretical foundations of language development in early childhood, and to equip students with the skills needed to observe, assess, and support children's language development effectively.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Describe the basic definitions and concepts related to language development.
2   Identify the components of language (phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics).
3   Develop developmentally appropriate practices that support language and concept development in children.
4   Understand how to use a variety of assessment strategies to monitor young children s progress and to plan literacy activities.

1 Introduction to Course
2 Components of language: Phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
3 Phonological development: Sound production, babbling, and first words.
4 Syntactic development: Transition from words to sentences and learning language structures.
5 Semantic development: Building meaning, word learning, and concept development.
6 Pragmatic development: Social use of language, communication rules, and conversational skills.
7 General Revision, Assessment, Mid-term exam
8 Language acquisition theories I: Behaviorist Approach (Skinner) and Nativist Approach (Chomsky).
9 Language acquisition theories II: Interactionist Approach and Social Interactionist Theory (Bruner, Vygotsky).
10 Early literacy development: Phonological awareness, vocabulary growth, and storytelling.
11 Bilingual and multilingual language development: Benefits, challenges, and support strategies.
12 Supporting children's language development through activities: Reading, language games, songs, and dramatization
13 Designing developmentally appropriate practices to support language development:
14 General review and student presentations: Language development assessment examples and activity designs.
