Course Objective

The purpose of this course is to teach the nature of mathematics and mathematical thinking, the meaning of learning and teaching of mathematics, the purpose and main principles of teaching of mathematics, the history of teaching of mathematics, the reflections of learning and teaching approaches on mathematics teaching, the main skills in mathematics teaching, examples of in-class applications, recent approaches in mathematics teaching and its problems, the components of the effective mathematics teaching and looking at mathematics teaching in social, cultural and economic perspectives.

1   Understand the meaning of the learning and teaching of mathematics.
2   Understand the history, purpose and principles of mathematics teaching.
3   Understand approaches and main skills for the learning and teaching of mathematics.
4   Understand recent approaches in mathematics teaching and its problems.
5   Understand social, cultural and economic importance of mathematics teaching.
