Course Objective

This course aims to teach the causes, diagnostic processes, and treatment principles of infectious diseases. It also focuses on the ear, nose, and throat. This section covers the structure and function of the organs for hearing and balance, their related diseases, clinical examination techniques, and the diagnosis and treatment of common upper respiratory tract infections. Finally, the course will address the anatomical structure of the eye, its function, the physiology of vision, and the differential diagnosis for conditions such as vision loss and "red eye."

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To perform examination of the nose, throat, and neck
2   To manage and control epistaxis
3   To recognize signs and symptoms of otitis media and explain treatment principles
4   To interpret audiological tests used in the assessment of hearing loss
5   To explain the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of adult ear diseases (otosclerosis, Ménière s disease, presbycusis)
6   To recognize salivary gland disorders
7   To describe the normal anatomical structure of the eye and explain the functions of its tissues
8   To measure visual acuity, perform color vision testing, conduct confrontation visual field testing, assess pupillary light reflexes, and perform direct ophthalmoscopy
9   To explain the refraction of light in the eye and the mechanism of vision, and to relate these to refractive errors
10   To inquire about decreased vision as a symptom and perform differential diagnosis
11   To describe the causes of red eye and discuss the diseases causing the symptom
12   To explain the pathophysiology of intraocular pressure, classify types of glaucoma, and evaluate the emergency treatment of acute angle-closure glaucoma
13   To discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cataract
14   To discuss the social impact of visual impairment on the individual, their relatives, and society; and to identify preventable causes of blindness
15   To understand visual development and explain the causes of amblyopia (lazy eye)
16   To evaluate eyelids and anterior ocular structures using a light source
17   To explain the rules and importance of contact lens use
18   To explain the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of HIV/AIDS
19   To discuss the importance of hospital-acquired infections and principles of prevention

Assessment Criteria

To be eligible to take the exam, students must:
Participate in at least 70% of the theoretical activities.
Participate in at least 80% of the block practicals and/or laboratory work.
Complete practical, laboratory, and similar intra-year work related to the block within the allotted timeframe.
Students who fail to meet all of these requirements must repeat that block or internship.

For the student's exam results to be valid:
A grade of 60 (sixty) or higher must be achieved in the end-of-task process evaluation for at least 70% of the tasks in the relevant block. Otherwise, the block will be repeated.
To calculate the end-of-block grade, the end-of-task evaluation average must be 60 (sixty), and the NÖKS and theoretical evaluation scores must each be at least 55 (fifty-five).
To pass the block, the block success grade must be at least 60 (sixty).

The student's final grade is calculated out of 100 (one hundred), with the following:
25% of the final task process evaluation grade point average,
25% of the NÖKS grade,
50% of the theoretical exam grade.
