Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the native sheep and goat breeds of Turkey as well as the commonly raised sheep and goat breeds worldwide, focusing on their productivity traits, herd management, age determination, culling, and selection methods. Additionally, it aims to teach the production and the morphological and physiological characteristics of wool, mohair, hair, and cashmere, and to develop the ability to plan the establishment, design, and sections of small ruminant shelters. In poultry production, the course covers rearing systems, techniques, equipment used in broiler and layer farming, slaughter processes, and animal welfare; it also addresses the origin of domestic chickens, chicken breeds, egg quality traits, sex determination in chickens, and incubation techniques, conditions, and common problems along with their solutions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the native sheep breeds of Türkiye based on productivity traits, the most commonly raised sheep breeds in the world, and flock management
2   Knows the production and characteristics of wool, mohair, hair, and cashmere. Knows the methods of age determination, culling, and selection in small ruminants.
3   Knows the native goat breeds of Türkiye based on productivity traits, the most commonly raised goat breeds in the world, and flock management
4   Knows the establishment, design, and components of small ruminant shelters
5   Knows the production systems, rearing techniques, slaughter process, and broiler welfare in broiler production
6   Has knowledge of the domestication of chickens, breed classification according to production traits, and the quality parameters of eggs
7   Knows the rearing systems in layer poultry farming, the equipment used in poultry farming, and sex determination in chickens
8   Knows the incubation techniques, conditions, and problems in poultry

1 The origin of the domestic sheep and the zoological classification of sheep. Native sheep breeds of Türkiye.
2 The most commonly raised sheep breeds in Türkiye and worldwide according to productivity traits
3 Crossbreeding studies with foreign sheep breeds in Türkiye
4 Flock management and rearing methods in sheep breeding
5 Morphological and physiological characteristics and production of wool, mohair, hair, and cashmere. Age determination in sheep and goats.
6 Planning, design, sections, and features of sheep and goat shelters
7 The origin of the domestic goat and its place in the zoological classification
8 The most commonly raised goat breeds in Türkiye and around the world according to their production traits
9 The origin of the domestic chicken, its place in the zoological classification, and the classification of chicken breeds
10 Poultry houses, poultry equipment, and environmental conditions inside the poultry house
11 Rearing systems in laying hen production
12 Egg quality characteristics, sex determination in chickens, and force molting
13 Incubation knowledge and incubation problems in poultry production
14 Broiler breeding
