Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge about cattle and horse breeding. The course covers an overview of animal husbandry, the domestication process, and the resulting changes in animal species. It includes the classification of cattle and horse breeds, with emphasis on native and commercial breeds, their evaluation based on milk and meat production, barn planning, nutrition, age determination, and breeding selection criteria. Additionally, students will learn about the care of horses based on life stages, coat colors and markings, and horse breeds raised in Türkiye, aiming to enhance their practical understanding.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the definitions of animal science (zootechnics), breed, species, crossbreeding, and hybridization concepts. Learns the history of domestication and the changes that have occurred in animal species are learned.
2   Knows about the numbers of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and chickens in Türkiye and the world, as well as the quantities of products obtained from them. Leans the registered native cattle breeds of Türkiye and the dairy cattle breeds.
3   Knows about Türkiye's native and registered cattle breeds, as well as the most commonly raised dairy and beef cattle breeds in the world.
4   Knows the planning, establishment, and sections of cattle barns.
5   Knows about the environmental factors affecting milk yield in dairy cattle and the measures to be taken against adverse environmental conditions.
6   Learns breeding selection criteria in dairy cattle and age determination in cattle.
7   Knows beef cattle breeds, the factors affecting fattening performance, and the valuable cuts of meat in the carcass.
8   Learns the important horse breeds raised in the world and in Türkiye, as well as coat colors and markings in horses.

Course Contents

1 An overview of animal husbandry, the history of domestication, and the changes that have occurred in animal species through domestication.
2 The concepts of species, breed, crossbreeding, and hybridization. Hybrids of cattle and horse species, and constitution of domestic animal.
3 Morphological and physiological breed characteristics in domestic animals
4 The origin of cattle and their place in the zoological system. Native and registered cattle breeds in Türkiye. The most commonly raised dairy cattle breeds in Türkiye and around the world.
5 Planning, design, sections and shelter characteristics of dairy cattle barns
6 Factors affecting milk yield in dairy cows
7 Breeding selection criteria in dairy cows
8 Records kept and breeding practices in dairy cattle farms
9 Age determination in cattle
10 Beef cattle breeds and types of cattle fattening
11 Factors affecting fattening performance in beef cattle
12 Slaughter maturity, carcass yield, and valuable meat cuts in beef cattle
13 The origin of horses, their place in the zoological system, and the horse breeds raised in Türkiye
14 Horse care according to life stages. Coat colors and markings in horses
