Course Objective

This course aims to provide students; the use of research methods for the social sciences, types and stages of scientific research to learn, transfer of technical knowledge required to perform scientific research and use of the scientific results, and reporting the results of his scientific research

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Basic concepts of scientific research Science and basic characteristics of science, scientific research concepts, scientific method concept.
2 Types of scientific research Concept of research model, scientific research and types of scientific research.
3 Qualitative and Quantitative Researchs Classification of research according to approach style, data collection techniques, data characteristics, purposes, data collection times, measurement conditions and observation unit.
4 Research Process: Problem, Purpose, Importance, Assumptions, Limitations, Variable Types Examination and exemplification of concepts of problem, purpose, importance, assumptions, limitations, variable types in planning the research process
5 Population and sample Concept of research universe, sampling and concepts related to sampling, sampling reasons, factors effective in calculating the number of samples.
6 Sampling methods:Random sampling Simple random sampling, Systematic sampling methods
7 Random sampling methods Stratified sampling and Cluster sampling methods
8 Non-random sampling Convenience sampling, Judgmental (Purposive-Deliberate) sampling, Quota sampling, Snowball sampling
9 Basic Concepts: Significance and Confidence level Concepts of significance and confidence level, Type I error, Type II error
10 Measures of central tendency and dispersion Used as a measure of central tendency; mode, arithmetic mean, median concepts tandard deviation, Variance, Distribution Range / Width, Coefficient of Variation and Standard Error concepts used to determine the variability of data and the shape of the distribution
11 Measurement and Evaluation Tools, Scale types Measurement concept, Measurement levels: Classification, Ordinal, Interval and Ratio scales
12 Normal distribution curve and normality tests Standard normal distribution, skewness, kurtosis concepts
13 Reliability, Validity Reliability and validity concepts, reliability and validity tests
14 Preparing a research report Points to be considered in preparing a research report.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam includes subjects and assignments in the course content (40%).
2. Final Exam: The exam will cover all subjects in the course content. Students are also responsible for the discussion, practice and case studies (60%).
3. Resit: The exam will cover all the topics in the course content. Students are also responsible for the discussion, practice and case studies (60%).

Assessment Criteria

At the end of this course the students are expected to be able to:

1. State the basic terms and concepts related to scientific research.
2. Explain the rationale behind making a scientific research by making a literature review, by asking a research question, by collecting and analyzing data and coming to a conclusion.
3. Diagnose the related problem and recommend solutions depending upon the results of the studied issue.
4. Categorize the details regarding data collection and analysis methods.
