Course Objective

The students will gain insight on motivation, attraction and destination choice factors that lead to different tourism behaviour, and develop ideas of mass tourism and alternative types of tourism product, and will also learn about concepts including special interest, co-creation of experiences, authenticity, staging, creative tourism experiences and niche markets. The students will ultimately develop types of tourism product within the scope of special interest tourism.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Evaluation of the classical tourism theory, development, characteristics and impacts of mass tourism
2   Evaluation of different types of tourism and types of tourism product
3   Understand diferent motivations, needs and destination choice that lead to different tourist behaviours
4   Learn the concepts of tourist experience, special interest and creative tourism
5   Analyse and develop types of tourism product within the scope of special interest tourism

1. Semester grade (%40):
1.a. Mid-term (%80): Aims to evaluate the students' knowledge on topics covered until the mid-terms.
1.b. Semester project (%20): Presentation of development of a type of tourism product within the scope of special interest tourism
2. Final (%60): Aims to evaluate the students' skill on development of types of tourism products within the scope of special interest tourism.

Assessment Criteria

The students are expected to obtain, generate and present relevant knowledge on special interest tourism and explore causality between relevant factors.

Course Policies and Rules

The students are expected to succeed in exams and presentations and to participate in discussions. A minimum of 70% attendance is required.
