Course Objective

This course aims to describe the world civilizations through basic events and phenomenons that humans have transferred from one generation to other since the beginnnig of humanity. The basic concepts of the history of civilisations, the basic problem areas of history of civilizations, old Asia Minor and Eigypt civilisations and cultures, Roman civilization, middle age, Renaissance and reforms, the age of enlightenment, American and French Revolutions, Industrial revolution, the movements of 19th century, the most important events of 20th century, the events after the 1st and 2nd world war are included in the content of this course.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain the civilization and history concepts.
2   To be able to list the basic problems of history of civilisations.
3   To be able to talk about the important roles that the different individuals, people and cultures played over the history of humanity
4   To be able to understand the sustainablility of the relationships of people during their life with philosophy, literature and art.
5   To be able to understand the nature of historical evolution.

Definition and concept of civilization,The evolution of human societies,Conflict and war,The relationship between culture and civilization,Early human societies and hunter-gatherer lifestyles, The Neolithic Revolution and the birth of agriculture, The rise of permanent settlements
2 Mesopotamia Civilisation Geographic conditions and prehistory of Mesopotamia, Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians
3 Egyptian Civilization Egyptian history, tombs, temples, beliefs and burial practices
4 Greek and Roman Period Minoan civilization, Mycenaean civilization, Roman Empire, religion, army, law and economy
5 Anatolia Prehistoric periods and civilizations of Anatolia
6 Central Asia Scythians, Huns, Turks
7 Islamic Civilization and Art The rise of Islam, science, philosophy, Islamic architecture
8 The Renaissance and Reformation Movements Reasons and results of the Renaissance and Reform Movements
9 The Age of Enlightenment The philosophical foundations of the Enlightenment, key figures,its effects on science, education and social reforms
10 The American Revolution and War of Independence Causes of the American revolution, important events and battles
11 The French Revolution and Its Effects Causes of the French Revolution, key figures and important events, its impact on Europe and the world

1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam encompasses the subjects covered in lectures (40%)
2. Final Exam: The exam encompasses subjects covered (60%)

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.
