Course Objective

This course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills required to communicate, or share information, with people from other cultures and social groups.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to define major terms and concepts related to cross-cultural communication
2   to explain the barriers against effective intercultural communication
3   to gain knowledge about the features of communication for different cultures
4   to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes that increase intercultural competence
5   to explain the relationship between cultures and communication

3 Cultural and value orientations Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's Values Orientation Theory, high-context and low context cultures,Schwartz's cultural value theory
4 Exploring and understanding Students' cultures Encouraging students to reflect on and share their own cultural heritage and identity
5 Factors affecting intercultural communication Cultural norms and values, language barriers,stereotypes and prejudices,ethnocentrism and cultural relativism
6 Intercultural verbal communicaion The components and characteristics of verbal codes, language, culture, and discourse,cultural variations in verbal communication, eufemizm ve tabu

Assessment Criteria

Exam papers will be evaluated regarding the level of understanding, as well as defining the causality between the basic concepts and issues of the lecture, ability of giving examples and analytical thought, and using relevant terminology.
