Course Objective

This course aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge and with examination of cases about human resources management (HRM), to provide students with knowledge and skills for improvement of human resources practices at organizations.

1   Explaining factors influencing development of HRM
2   Interpreting the progress in HRM in the light of classical and modern theories of organization
3   Having fundamental knowledge on job analysis, human resources planning and recruitment

1 The meaning and scope of HR, difference between HR and personnel management The concept of human resources management, its historical development and differences from personnel management and the relationships between human resources management functions
2 Digitalization in human resources management Digital applications in human resources management (crowdsourcing, big data, sentiment analysis, mobile applications, recruitment with artificial intelligence)
3 Job analysis Job analysis concept, job analysis process, data collection techniques, job description and job requirements
4 Job design Job design concept, methods used in job design
5 Job evaluation Job evaluation concept, non-numerical job evaluation methods (Ranking method, classification method)
6 Job evaluation methods Numerical job evaluation methods (Scoring method, factor comparison method
7 Performance evaluation Performance concept and its importance, establishment of performance standards, performance evaluation errors
8 Classical performance evaluation methods Classical performance evaluation methods: Ranking (simple ranking, alternative ranking, scoring and binary comparison) Forced distribution, Graphic rating, Checklists (normal checklists, forced choice) and Job dimension
9 Modern performance evaluation methods Modern performance evaluation methods: 360 degrees, Management by objectives, Behavioral evaluation scale

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Midterm Exam: Midterm exam includes subjects and assignments in the course content (40%).
2. Final Exam: The exam will cover all subjects in the course content. Students are also responsible for the discussion, practice and case studies (60%).
3. Resit: The exam will cover all the topics in the course content. Students are also responsible for the discussion, practice and case studies (60%).

Assessment Criteria

At the end of this course the students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain what human resource management (HR) is and how managers can use HR concepts and techniques.
2 Prepare and write job descriptions, including summaries, accountabilities, job requirements, and job specifications using both the Internet and traditional methods.
3. Describe and illustrate how to go about identifying training requirements.
4. Explain contemporary performance evaluation methods in detail.
5. Explain in detail how wage payment levels, incentive schemes and social assistance should be structured.
