Course Objective

Acquire the ability to comprehend any written texts related to international logistics related telex messages.

1   Read and understand maritime business related articles appearing in the relevant journals and/or books
2   Summarize in oral and/or written forms what has been underlined in such readings
3   Fill out maritime business related forms and/or documents such as Bill of Ladings and Charter Parties
4   Carry out decent, clear and neat correspondences, communications in maritime business and logistics related activities
5   Carry out negotiations in logistics

1 Focusing on pronunciation, mastering the phonetic sounds, weak and strong stresses
2 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Anticipation and guessing the meanings in context
3 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Reading between line, drawing conclusions, making inferences
4 Reviewing the basic reading skills: Developing dictionary using skills
5 Reviewing the basic reading/writing skills: Summarizing paragraphs and articles, finding main ideas and recognizing topic sentences
6 Reviewing the basic reading/writing skills: Enhancing the skill for summarizing, focusing on producing the summary through phrases rather than complete sentences
7 Reviewing the basic listening skills: Summarizing, discussing and answering the questions about what has been listened to
8 Charter Party Clauses: Sentence analysis, distinguishing main clause / subordinate clause.
9 Charter Party Clauses (cont d): Focusing on sentence analysis as well as the maritime law terms.
10 Bill of Lading Clauses: Enhancing sentence analysis, simplifying long sentences.
11 Bill of Lading Clauses (cont d): Reviewing adjectives, adverbs and noun clauses
12 Chartering telex negotiations: Recognizing, abbreviations, comprehending telex messages
