Course Objective

The course objective is to increase language awareness of the students and emphasize the importance of language for translation.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be aware of how Turkish is misused in printed and visual media
2   Be aware of how Turkish is degenerated under the impression of foreign languages
3   Learn how to use Turkish in scientific studies
4   Recognize the mistakes/errors in Turkish translations
5   Learn how to reflect the awareness acquired in this course to other foreign languages

3 Discussion of the news on TRT and private channels

5 Discussion on the lingual features of the newspaper Milliyet
6 Lingual elements in `Aşk by Elif Safak
7 Review of the newspapers Sozcu and Zaman

9 Stylistic features of Turkish authors writing in a foreign language
10 Examples of proper use of Turkish: scientific papers, examples from the works of academicians

Recomended or Required Reading

Printed media and three books, one is a book written in a foreign language by a Turkish writer and translated into Turkish, the other is a Turkish book by a Turkish writer, and the third one is a translated book.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Lesson
Students are required to examine printed and visual media, and to bring all the findings concerning the use of Turkish to the classroom.
2. Revision Sessions and Classroom Discussions
Turkish mistakes/errors in the printed and visual media or in the translated book each week. Students are required to participate in classroom discussion.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

1. Exams will evaluate whether students are able to detect lingual errors in texts.
2. Students are required to do their assignments each week. It is obligatory to do assignments on one s own so as to be pass the course. Assignments are also important to prepare students for the exams.

Assessment Criteria

Assignments and classroom participation will have an impact at 20%, mid-term at 40% and final exam at 40%.
