Course Objective

Teaching basic material knowledge, structural, mechanical and physical properties of materials. Providing basic information in material selection.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn the types and properties of atomic bonds.
2   Classifies materials according to their types.
3   Gain a general understanding of the mechanisms that change and control the properties of materials and master the basic principles of materials science.
4   They understand heat treatment in general terms.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Description of the material, mechanical, physical, chemical and thermal properties, classification of materials.
2 Atomic structure, atomic models, atomic bonds.
3 Unit cell, space lattice, Bravais lattices.
4 Atomic filling factor, presence of concentrations of crystal structure, allotropy.
5 Solidification and melting behavior, pure and alloy material to cool down.
6 Solidification and melting behavior, pure and alloy material to cool down.
7 I. Midterm
8 Iron-carbon equilibrium diagram.
9 Austenite, ferrite, pearlite, cementite, ledeburit concepts.
10 Equilibrium diagram, critical temperatures, the contribution of alloying elements.
11 Cast irons and uses

14 Hardness-making processes, Jominy test.

It is calculated by taking 40% average grade of Midterm exams, 60% of the final exam success rating.
