Course Objective

Personal beliefs and tendencies aside, religion is a socially important phenomenon. The aim of this course is how gender is perceived not only in Islam but also in Turkish belief system from history to the present; examine perspectives on gender differences in terms of scriptures, tradition and legal norms; to reveal whether certain distinctions arise from the essence of believes or from tradition and culture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1 to be able to learn how gender is perceived in Islam and Turkish belief system
2   2 to be able to perceive similarities and differences between Islam and Turkish belief system on gender
3   3 to be able to see belief fundamentals of which gender discriminations are based on
4   4 to be able to distinguish the difference between religious and cultural gender discrimination
5   5 to have an idea on whether religious traditions and beliefs can make a positive contribution to gender discrimination or not
