Course Objective

The objective of the course is to answer the question Who is woman by identifying the position of woman in society and addressing the woman s position in politics. The role of woman in Turkish politics from the foundation of the Republic to contemporary Türkiye will be discussed. Woman s political rights will be examined not only within the general political structure, but also the dynamics of local politics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Various examples of women political struggle in Türkiye and the world will be given.
2   Consciousness raising tendencies emerging as a result of enlightenment philosophy in several countries will be examined from the viewpoint of political philosophy.
3   The women s position in political life from both modernist and post-modernist perspectives will be debated.
4   The woman and political life during the era 1923-1946 will be examined.
5   The role of women and political life during the multi-party era will be examined.
6   Women s position and activities in general and local politics in 21st century Türkiye will be explained.

4 Women s political tendencies and demands for rights: Inter-country examples of similar or contrasting struggle.
5 Women s suffrage
6 The meaning of women s suffrage for political life in Türkiye.
7 The relationship between declaration of Republic and woman s status.
8 The aspects of women s movements, feminist attitudes and their impact on political life.
9 The importance of women s involvement in public sphere and the position of women in public arena.
10 1961 Constitution and Woman
11 1982 Constitution and Woman
12 The consequences of women s movements in political life between 1980-2000s in Türkiye.
