Course Objective

Investigation of the equilibrium state of the rigid bodies under static loading. Introduction to the mechanics of deformable bodies with how forces are distributed inside bodies, and with the deformations caused by these internal force distributions.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Able to describe the force and equilibrium concepts and express the forces in vector form
2   Able to solve the status of two-dimensional and three-dimensional effect of forces on an object
3   Able to define the concepts of support and the rod system and to calculate the support reaction of two dimensional beam elements
4   Able to define normal stress, bending stress, shear stress, torsional stress concepts
5   Able to express compression and tension stresses concepts
6   Able to describe the elasticity modulus, shear modulus, stain and rigidity concepts
7   Able to describe the internal forces due to external loading
8   Able to define the concept of factor of safety and dimensioning the beam elements under static loading
9   Able to describe the concept of combined stress
