Course Objective

In general, it is to teach the 10 sub-branches of gemology, and in particular, to provide scientific teaching of diamonds and pearls and to conduct widespread research on these materials.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. To be able to define the science of gemology and its sub-branches.
2   2. Ability to grade diamonds scientifically.
3   3. Being able to classify pearls scientifically.
4   4. To be able to outline the Diamond and Pearl trade.
5   5. Ability to collect data and submit reports through scientific research on Diamonds and Pearls.

1 Historical development of diamond cutting. Physical and optical properties of diamond. Basically the 4Cs of a diamond (colour, clarity, cut and carat weight). 1. WEEK
2 Classifying polished diamonds by color. Effects of fluorescence on diamond. How to evaluate diamonds based on normal color ranges. Treated and fancy colored diamonds. 2. WEEK
3 How to determine and evaluate clarity inclusions and errors. Judging polished diamonds by clarity. How inclusions affect appearance and stability. 3. WEEK
4 Evaluating polished diamonds by cut and weight. Differences between carat and carat. Analysis of crown, pavilion part and total depth. Evaluation of finishing details. Calculating and finding the angles of the table, crown and pavilion. 4. WEEK

Assessment Criteria

Five learning outcomes will be measured as a result of the theoretical midterm exam, mid-term practice and homework studies, and the final + make-up exam.
1.Theoretical Midterm Exam 30% (LO1, LO2, LO3)
2.Semester Application (in the form of laboratory and workshop) and Research Assignments Presentations 10% (LO4)
3.Final 60% (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4)

Each student must attend at least 80% of the lessons. Any act of cheating during classes and exams will be considered as a disciplinary offense.
