Course Objective

The aim of this course to describe the working principles of instrumental analysis equipments, to introduce parts of the device and to teach applications of the device to the students.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define potentiometric titration method and its applications.
2   To be able to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of a mixture using gas chromatography device.
3   To be able to do analysis of heavy metals using atomic absorption spectroscopy device.
4   To be able to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis using ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy device.
5   To be able to explain the importance of instrument device calibration while working with analysis instruments.

Course Contents

1 Introduction to instrumental analysis laboratory, introduction of laboratory work rules and the device to be worked and the methods.
2 Introduction to electroanalytical chemistry, determination of acid by potentiometric titration.
3 Determination of pKa value of a weak acid by potentiometric titration.
4 Determination of an acid mixture by conductometric titration
5 Application of quanitative analysis by gas chromatography.
6 Application of quanitative analysis by gas chromatography.
7 Determination of copper in various drinks using atomic absorption spectrometry.
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Determination of iron in drinking water samples using atomic absorption spectrometry.
10 Determination of manganese in drinking water using Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometry.
11 Determination of iron in drinking water by the spectrophotometric method.
12 Determination of the sugar percentage in aqueous sugar solution by measurement of the refractive index.
13 Determination of turbidity, pH, conductivity and total dissolved substance (TDS) in drinking water.
14 Determination of sulphate ions in drinking water by turbidimetry.
15 Petroleum Products and Analysis Applications, ASTM distillation and flash point determination of diesel fuel

The five learning outcomes will be assessed by mid-term (LO-1, LO-2) and final exams (LO-1, LO-2, LO-3, LO-4, LO-5).
