Course Objective

This course is designed as an introduction to qualitative research methods. The course will emphasize the realist case study research strategy for purposes of description, theory building, and theory-testing.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be familiar with the spectrum of qualitative methods and techniques
2   Understand the elements of case study research design and know its appropriate evaluation criteria
3   Know about and practice using the tools developed to support qualitative research
4   Practice key qualitative research skills including: research design, interviewing, data management,coding, advanced analysis techniques, and writing up qualitative research
5   Evaluate published qualitative studies according to relevant evaluation

Assessment Criteria

1. MIDTERM EXAM: Midterm exam will be based on essays and discussions, which evaluate understanding, synthesis and evaluation of the lecture material and articles discussed in the class.
2. TERM PROJECT: According to the reading list that will be provided by the instructor, students are expected to read the related articles for each week before coming to the class. They are expected to prepare a written report and contribute to class discussions related to the articles.
3. FINAL EXAM: Students will be assessed on their knowledge of concepts through essay type questions.

(A) Grading of Term Project

1) Professional Presentation: During your presentation, it is expected to make a professional presentation (maintain eye contact, do not read, organize slide structure, and have comprehensive knowledge of the subject) (50 points).

2) Literature Review: Use at least 2 reference books and 10 articles and related internet sites (50 points).

This particular element is somewhat absent and does not entirely fit the context. Fair (40%)
This particular element is developed satisfactorily and fits the context at an acceptable standard. Good (60%)
This particular element is developed in a good and professional way and fits into the context. Very good (80%)
The way this particular element is developed is noteworthy and fits perfectly into the context. Excellent (100%)
