Course Objective

This course aims to provide a theoretical background which is required for understanding the historical development process of modern interior space styles, improving the ability of interpreting the current tendencies in the interior styles and establishing a connection between the textile patterns and styles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   1. Ability to reach any kinds of resources about a research subject in Turkish or any foreign language
2   2. Ability to define the interior space changes depending on the technological, scientific and socio-economic conditions
3   3. Ability to interpret the effects of lifestyle and artistic point of view on the interior space styles
4   4. Ability to define the effect of manufacturing processes and interior changes on the textile
5   5. Ability to define the relationship of space-style-textile within the context of the historical relation of space and textile

2 Space understanding and textiles in the Middle Ages and Gothic period
3 Renaissance Period, its spaces and textiles
4 Interior spaces and textiles in Italy, France and England; the characteristics of Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classic and Empire Styles
5 Socio-economic outcomes of the Industrial Revolution and its effects on space
6 Lifestyle of the Victorian Era
7 Arts& Craft Movement and space-textile relationship, Art Nouveau Movement and space-textile relationship.
8 Mid-term
9 Biedermeier, space understandings of Vienna Atelier and their effects on the textile design
10 Art Deco Movement and space-textile relationship.
11 Modernism, novelties brought by Bauhaus understandings to space and their effects on textile design
12 The effects of postmodern understanding on space and textile design, Memphis
13 Preparation for Assignment

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

By looking into resources on the historical development of space-style and textile in Turkish and foreign languages and researching about modern decoration styles and textile patterns, the interactive evaluations about the historical background of modern tendencies are carried out. After the preliminary research, an interior space style is chosen and at the end of researching more in-depthly about the chosen interior space style and textiles used in this style, a report is prepared.
