Course Objective

The aim of this course is to understand the historical development of European integration, its different policy areas and to explore mainstream and critical theoretical approaches that aspire to explicate European integration process. Which conceptual frameworks are developed to understand integration process within the field of International Relations and Political Science How did the integration start and how did it evolve in time What are the main policy fields of integration within the European Union and how do they work

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate understanding of conventional and critical theories on European integration.
2   Demonstrate understanding of the historical development of European integration process.
3   Comprehend knowledge on specific European Union policies.
4   Be able to acquire skills to conduct research and to present it.
5   Be able to acquire skills to prepare short assignments.

Assessment Criteria

1. Learners will explain the historical evolution of European integration.
2. Learners will develop an understanding of theoretical approaches in the literature to analyze the process of European integration.
3. Learners will get knowledge about diverse European Union policies.
4. Learners will practice to write short assignments of their choice from the reading list for three weeks.

Course Policies and Rules


1. It is obligatory to attend at least 70% of the classes.
2. Violations of Plagiarism of any kind will result in disciplinary steps being taken.
3. Learners have to make sure that they read all the required course material before the class and participate in class discussions by demonstrating required knowledge.
