Course Objective

This course aims to help the student to understand the core concepts and problems of the philosophy of art from a historical perspective.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   develop a general notion of philosophy.
2   define philosophy of art and aesthetics as disciplines of philosophy in terms of their specific problems, concepts and fields of inquiry.
3   to know and distinguish the different forms philosophy of art and aesthetics have taken throughout the developmental history of philosophy.
4   locate the phenomenon of art as integral part of human experience.
5   be able to think about the similarities and differences between art and other such human activities as science, morals, religion, politics and etc.
6   develop an ability to critically consider and evaluate the problems and concepts of philosophy of art.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course traces the development of philosophical concepts in relation to art through the Mythological times, Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Enlightenment and the Twentieth century.

Evaluation will be based on the student s ability to express his understanding of the course content and his language skills.

Assessment Criteria

In the classical written examinations, attention is paid to the student's general and philosophical literacy, the ability to understand and explain the issues and problems covered in the texts and in class discussions.
