Course Objective

This course reviews the current state of the Turkish economy with a specific emphasis on its history and structural and institutional change. A broad account of the Ottoman economic legacy, pre-and post-Great Depression Turkish economy, different policies of the pre-liberalization era, and the economic developments during the period between 1980 and present are the subjects that will be covered during the semester to provide a basis to understand the current state of the Turkish economy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   On successful completion of this course, students will be able to judge the structural and institutional change in the Turkish economy over the last 200 years.
2   Students will be able to discuss the current problems and opportunities of the Turkish economy.
3   Students will be able to identify the major actors and institutions of Turkish economy and their roles in the economic system of Türkiye.
4   Students will be able to prepare a research paper on a relevant topic.
5   Students will be able to follow developments in Turkish economy in line with the developments in world economy.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

There will be two in-class (or take-home) examinations and students are expected to write a term paper. Students are expected to come up with a topic by the end of the third week of the semester.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student will demostrate understanding of current events in Turkish economy using relevant theoretical tools.
2. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the major actors and institutions in Turkish economy.
3. The student will be able to explain the different microeconomic, macroeconomic and international trade policy tools that have been applied/are being applied in Turkish economy together with their effects on the economy.
4. The student will possess advanced knowledge on the sectoral developments in Turkish economy.
