Course Objective

Understanding neurobiological, developmental, conceptual and neuroanatomical underpinnings of social cognitive and affective information processing, and discussing experimental, psychometric and clinical methods for assessing these abilities, and understanding how these abilities are affected in different neuropsychiatric disorders.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learning conceptual, developmental and psychometric aspects of social cognition (i.e., theory of mind (ToM), emotion recognition and expression, empathy), and affective information processing including motivation, reward, affective decision making and moral values.
2   To have comprehensive knowledge of chemical, cellular, structural and functional neuroanatomy of social cognitive and affective information processing
3   To learn about social cognitive deficits and abnormalities in motivation and reward in different neuropsychiatric conditions including schizophrenia, autism, dementia and neurodegenerative diseases, mental retardation, major depression, bipolar disorder and substance use disorders
4   Gaining a better understanding of neuroscientific aspects of treatment and rehabilitation approaches targeting abnormalities in social cognitive and affective information processing
5   To have knowledge about brain imaging, electrophysiological, neuropsychological and other biological methods used in social cognitive and affective neuroscience
