Course Objective

This course aims at helping the student discover formally as well as conceptually that in the process of painting the characteristics of paint itself, the painter s experience with the paint and the formation processes which evoke a visceral response in the viewer, together play a role in the creation of the work s meaning.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   that balancing visual, formal elements and conceptual goals in painting is of importance;
2   that beyond the surface effects such as brush strokes, fine and thick paint transitions, transparent and opaque paint applications, impasto, raw canvas, and considerations regarding the texture, the visual effects of the painting surface, the painting process includes the individuality of the painter, his or her personal aesthetic and technical decisions and counter-decisions;
3   that with its material nature painting has been an important actor in the history of art and continues to be a viable means of expression in today s art.
