Course Objective

This course aims at providing students with the foundations and basic notions of phonetics and phonology, with the knowledge about how speech sounds are produced and categorised, in which phonetic and phonological processes do the sounds appear and what kinds of variations these processes cause, and which rule patterns underlie these variations.

1   define the basic concepts of phonetics and phonology
2   distinguish the phonetic symbols for speech sounds
3   categorise the speech sounds
4   explain how the speech sounds are produced
5   how sounds are related to each other and which processes have effect on these sounds
6   analyse various samples from the sound systems of different languages
