Course Objective

To observe the existence of the authority of the church in all parts of western society in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the beginning of this authority, reform, enlightenment, industrial revolution periods, such as, how they change the entire world under the influence of the western tradition, the change of historical process of positivist thought, revolution, and modernism, and to interpret them all.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Knows the reasons of becoming of the church as the sole religious and political authority in Medieval Europe.
2   Understands religion's loosing process of legitimacy in Europe besides the Renaissance, reformation and enlightenment.
3   Interprets the approach of many "ism"s to the religion which emerging together with drawing slowly away of religion from Western society.
4   Analyzes the reasons of the fact that these changes in the tradition of Western societies exist at different levels and do not exist in same manner.
5   Comments the criticism of modernism from the perspective of Western societies, in the sense of confrontation of contemporary West with its history.

3 Relations between the political governments and the church
4 Renaissance and reform movements change the social life and the church
5 Developments preparing the transition from feudal to capitalist society
6 Martin Luther's reform and the idea of the two kingdoms
7 Calvin's reform and the spirit of capitalism
8 1789 the French Revolution, the effects of local and global dimension
9 The emergence of the bourgeois and the class struggle
10 Europe's scientific, philosophical, artistic, and religious status in 17th century: Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Newton and so on.
11 View of Enlightenment philosophers to religion and politics
12 The industrial revolution and the strengthening of the capitalist economy
13 The fact that modernity is the only through fund
14 The West moves itself, its religion and modernity to the agenda again in the postmodern world
