Course Objective

To highlight the social and economic status of women in the Ottoman Empire, developments in women's rights during the modernization process, the achievements of women in the Republican era, and the changes in gender roles in society

2   Explaining developments in the field of women's rights during the modernization process.
3   Analyzing the achievements of women in Republican Türkiye.
4   Understanding the roles of women in social and economic life in Türkiye.

1 Fundamental concepts and theories related to women's history. Women in the political life of the Republic era.
2 The social situation of women in Türkiye before modernization. The economic and cultural positions of women.
3 The impact of Tanzimat modernization on women's living conditions. Prominent figures in the women's rights movement.
4 The social and economic status of women during the reign of Abdulhamid II. The general situation of women's rights towards the 2000s
5 The development of women's rights during the Second Constitutional Period.
6 Women during the Turkish War of Independence.
7 Women's rights during the Single-Party period.
8 Midterm exam.
9 The Democratic Party and women's rights.
10 The social struggle of women in 1960s Türkiye.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

To review the weekly subjects together with the students after the subjects are re-outlined by the lecturer, based on the pre-course reading process done by the students, and also to encourage the students to make a short presentation on a subject they prefer during the semester (if possible).
