Course Objective

The aim of the course is to gain the student knowledge and skill in terms of evidence based resources, AORN standards and up-to-date guides, the responsibilities and roles of operating room nurses, patient care management in the operating room, the preparation of the operating room, up-to-date practices in the operating room environment, patient-staff safety, ethical principles and legal procedures.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   The student explains the importance of the professional role of operating room nursing
2   The student diagnoses patient issues by analysing the data and determine evidence based individual care.
3   The student discusses nursing interventions according to anaesthesia types and operation types.
4   The student questions patient-staff safety in the operating room.
5   The student explains the ethical and legal issues in the operating room environment
6   The student assesses the effect of medical treatment and nursing care in the operating room in accordance with her/his observation.

1 AORN suggestions for the roles and responsibilities of the operating room staff. The introduction of the Organization of Turkish Surgical and Operating Room Nurses
2 Surgical asepsis and infection control
3 The roles of nurses in the preparation of mayo table, operation positions and preventing complications (Pressure injury, DVT etc).
4 Anesthesia, analgesia and sedation
5 Patient safety in the operating room and AORN suggestions *Medical errors * Risk factors in patient safety *Enhancing patient safety *The culture of patient safety *National and international studies regarding patient safety
6 *JCI s patient safety targets and practices *Creating a safe environment
