Course Objective

Objective of the course is to introduce and evaluate the rules of international law related to the use of force.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define basic concepts and rules related to use of force in international law
2   To be able to express the historical development on restriction of the use of force in international law
3   To be able to define the principle of the prohibition of the use of force in international law
4   To be able to express exceptions to the prohibition on the use of force in international relations
5   To be able to evaluate situations involving use of force in international relations according to the international law

2 Historical process on regulating the use of force in international law inter-wars period
3 Prohibition of the use of force in international relations in the UN Charter era
4 The concept of "aggression" and the authority of the International Criminal Court
5 Use of force on the basis of the resolutions of UN bodies
6 Use of force within the right of self-defence
7 Midterm Exam
8 Judgments of the ICJ related to the use of force the Nicaragua Case (1986)
9 Judgments of the ICJ related to the use of force Case Concerning Armed Activities on the Territory of the Congo (2005)
10 Consent based foreign military intervention
11 Humanitarian intervention

13 Use of force by regional organizations NATO's intervention in Kosovo
