Course Objective

The objective of this course is to introduce fundamental HR concepts and processes in lodging industry and tourism; to explain how organizations manage human side of the operations; to examine the role of HR department and alternative HR management policy and applications; and to discuss HR outputs and processes in tourism and lodging industry.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain Human Resources Management in lodging businesses and tourism; and how managers can utilize human resources concept and techniques.
2   Explain wage-level steps and compensation plans in lodging businesses and tourism.
3   Explain the roles of employees and managers in career development in lodging businesses and tourism.
4   Develop verbal and writing communication skills at explaining and defending a topic.
5   Develop skills to become an efficient team-member.

Assessment Criteria

1. Midterm
The students' knowledge about concepts and theories will be evaluated with a written exam.
2. Field Study and Presentation
The groups will make a field study in an organization setting and prepare a written report in accordance with writing rules. They will also share their experiences with an oral presentation in the class.
3. In-class discussions and Presentation
Certain cases and questions will be given to the students. The groups will discuss their opinions with other groups. The students will be asked to join to the discussions.
4. Attendance
The students will aslo be evaluated according to their attending frequencies to the classes.


Case Study Assignment

1) Facts/Summary/of Case: Aspects, features of the background of the case, consider the facts, unique perspectives, (10 Points)
2) Problem Identification: Recognize the problems, issues (20 Points)
3) Analysis: Assessment of the facts of the case, assessment of issues (20 Points)
4) Alternate Solution/ Options/and Best Solution: Assessment of alternative options, comparison between alternatives (20 Points)
5) Recommendations: Observations, action plan, final decisions with evidence (20 Points)
6) Conclusions/ Outcomes: Positive/negative consequences tied to the issues (10 Points)

Research Paper Assignment
1) Statement of Purpose: Organization, background of argument, understanding of, contribution to chosen field(10 Points)
2) Introduction: Explanation to why the topic is pertinent, originality, discussion of the topic (10 Points)
3) Content: Writer s own reliying, quotes, paraphrising, connection and integration among them, ways to think about material, currency/recency (10 Points)
