Course Objective

The main purpose of the course is to provide the student with in-depth knowledge of the historical fundamentals of modern Europe, paving the way towards a comprehensive understanding of the ongoing European Integration. For this purpose, following a conceptual introduction, the major events that led to the emergence of Europe as an idea/ideal will be reviewed. Upon this background, the turning points of the European history from the Early Modern period up until the foundation of the European Union will be studied in detail.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Demonstrate the historical context in which the concept of 'Europe' emerged as a concept and ideal.
2   Show a comprehensive understanding of the historical context of political, cultural and social factors that led to the rise of modernity in Europe.
3   Demonstrate their ability to compare the major European countries, with respect to their roles in the turning points of European history.
4   Explain the political, cultural and philosophical factors that paved the way for European Integration.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is based on lectures. Prior to each lecture, students should have completed the relevant readings and have taken down notes for class discussion. A seminar presentation will also be prepared by the end of the course.

3. The learner will demonstrate sufficient knowledge on the historical context of political, cultural and social factors that led to the rise of modernity in Europe.
4. The learner will present the analyses of the major European countries, with respect to their roles in the turning points of European history.
5. The learner will explain the political, cultural and philosophical factors that paved the way for European Integration.

2. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
3. All assignments should be submitted on time. Otherwise will not be accepted.
