Course Objective

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To teach students the basics of biodesign.
2   To teach students how biomedical techniques can be associated with biodesign.
3   To describe and discuss biodesign samples in biomedical engineering.
4   To have students work on bio-design applications in biomedical engineering.
5   Be able to recognize, describe, and apply the Biodesign approach to the creation of innovative concept solutions in biomedical engineering.

1 Introduction to biodesign: What is biodesign What is the difference between biodesign, biomimetic design, and biointeractive design
2 General view on biodesign process: 10 design rules of nature, Inspiration forms in biodesign
3 Biodesign in Biomedical Engineering: Current examples, Examples for mimicking of nature in terms of materials
4 Evolutionary computations and genetic algorithms
5 Nanotechnology in Biomedical Engineering
6 Fundamentals on biomechanical device design
7 Midterm exam
8 Guest Lecturers: Presentation of clinical problems by the guest lecturer from the Cardiology Department
9 Guest Lecturers: Presentation of clinical problems by the guest lecturer from the Neurology and Physiology Departments
10 Determination of Project subjects (Brainstorming): Determining biodesign needs in the field of Biomedical Engineering and creating relevant project topics
11 Literature and patent search: Listing of biodesign applications and patents in the field of Biomedical Engineering
12 Team work 1 (Brainstorming): Preliminary work in line with the determined project subjects and definition of the problem
13 Team work 2 (Brainstorming): Determining the design methods for the project and developing the suitable concept
14 Team work 3 (Brainstorming): Implementation of the concept developed
15 Project presentations: Presentations of designs developed by groups of up to 3 people
16 Final Exam
