Course Objective

The aim of the course is to cover the legislative and management aspects of spatial
planning in Türkiye with an emphasis on existing frame work and a critical over view.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   will be able to define urban planning problems globally and locally (Knowledge)
2   will be able to define the typologies of different planning approaches (Knowledge)
3   will be able to describe actual situations of urban areas (Comprehension)
4   will be able to interpret and evaluate the existing planning legislation (Application)
5   will be able to relate problems of urban areas to basic principles of planning
6   will be able to propose new problem solution models for urban design (Synthesis)
7   will be able to revise the norms and standards in urban planning locally

1 Brief description of the course outline.
2 Definition of the social systems. General problems of spatial planning in Türkiye. A brief historical approach.
3 Theoretical background. Planning hierarchies and interrelations. Social, economic, physical, sectorial aspects of planning. Subject of term paper
4 Planning theory in general.
5 Discussions on urbanization.
6 Basic human behaviour, social choice and value judgement. Research for term paper
7 Basic human behaviour, social choice and value judgement.
8 Mid-term exam.
9 Inventories legal and administrative planning items.
10 Inventories legal and administrative planning items.
11 Sectors affecting spatial planning.
12 Planning standards, design criteria. Technical aspects.
13 Physical and social infrastructure. Typological aspects of management.
14 Political and cultural aspects. General conclusion and discussions.
15 Final exam.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This course will be given through lectures and the students will learn by attending and
conceiving the lectures. Besides the midterm and final examinations, students will be
asked to prepare homework and to participate in the lecture.
