Course Objective

In recent years, thanks to its benefits on individual and public health, walking is investigated frequently, and it s recommended to design walkable places, as well encourage people to walk. In order to determine the walkable places qualities, it s important to observe the walking behaviour by multiple methods. In this course it s aimed to examine the methods that researchers used to observe walking behaviour. In addition, students are expected to experience these methods via designed empirical studies by themselves.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, the students are expected to define the walking behaviour that is the most common form of physical activity which is important for individual and public health
2   to compare the relation between different types of walking and health
3   to interpret the demographic, developmental, social and physical environmental variables that affect walking behavior
4   to evaluate the subjective and objective methods on walking observations
5   to design an empirical research by using different methods on measuring walking.

This course will be given through conference presentations and literature readings. Students will prepare homework on course topics and make individual presentations.

Description and Comparison are evaluated by the Homework assignment. Interpretation and Measure are evaluated by the Presentation. Designing is evaluated by Final Exam.
