Course Objective

The aim of the PLN 5007 Metropolitan Planning, is to cover initially the analytical methods for understanding the metropolitan regions and metropolitan cities, and then to develop necessary back ground for the students to think about the systems for metropolitan planning in terms of social, economic and physical means.
The process of such a study requires detailed analysis of potentials of a metropolitan region. Process of city planning is subject to discussions in comparison to metropolitan planning and the concept of basic regional planning approaches is also needed to be over viewed. The metropolitan city is taken as a unique entity being subject to investigation and supplementary theoretical study carries the study to a further step as to provide the students with the ability to comprehend metropolitan planning strategies and policies with an emphasis to management of such areas.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   At the end of this course, students,will be able to define metropolitan planning problems globally and locally (Knowledge),
2   will be able to list different planning techniques and methods (Knowledge),
3   will be able to describe actual situations of metropolitan areas (Comprehension),

5   will be able to relate planning approaches to information systems (Analysis).

7   will be able to revise the actual planning system locally (Evaluation).

1 Brief description of the course outline.
2 Definition of the metropolitan region and metropolitan city. General problems of metropolitan cities and regions. Aspects of urbanized region. A geographical approach
3 Theoretical framework for background knowledge. Planning hierarchies and interrelations. A historical approach.
4 Concepts of trade theory, location theory, theory of import and export.
5 Discussions on urbanization, centralization and de centralization.
6 City size and rank size distribution. Regional and interregional input-output analysis.
7 Gravity model. Delineating the metropolitan influence area.
8 Flow analysis and transportation demand estimations in metropolitan areas.
9 Land use structure in metropolitan city
10 Social and economic structure in metropolitan city.
11 Social and economic structure in metropolitan city.
12 Management, fiscal and legislative aspects.
13 Post-modern metropolis.
