Course Objective

The increasing importance of planning and constructing of the structures in coastlines, dividing land from sea and ocean, stimulated dealing with the complex geotechnical problems in coastal areas. Therefore, the geotechnical investigation methods and techniques to design the foundations of coastal and harbor structures are focused in this lecture. Students will be requested to understand and study on various aspects of geotechnical engineering problems in coastal areas. The lecture involves geotechnical aspects in coastal engineering, site investigation in coastal areas, analysis, planning, and designing of foundation for coastal structures, and planning of sheet pile walls for harbors and waterways.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

7   To learn analysis and design methods of single pile and pile groups under lateral loading
8   To study piling for marine structures
9   To study foundation of near-shore wind energy systems
10   To gain the knowledge of site investigation and designing of near-shore wind energy systems foundations
11   To study sheet pile wall structures, their performance and field of application for harbors and waterways
