Course Objective

This course aims to enable graduate students to learn the computer-aided design of ship forms with hydrostatic, stability, hydrodynamic and structural analysis.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will a a knowledge of basic methods and tools used in computer aided ship design
2   An appreciation of the advantages of computers in ship design process
3   A knowledge of availability of computer-aided ship design softwares
4   A background on the applications of computers in ship design

1 Introduction to Ship Geometry (basic definitions and form coefficients of a ship)
2 Geometrical design of ships by different approaches
3 Introduction to hydrostatics and stability calculations
4 Introduction to hydrostatics and stability calculations
5 Introduction to CAD softwares
6 Drawing of 2D Form Plan of a ship by using CAD software
7 Drawing of 2D Form Plan of a ship by using CAD software
8 Modelling of 3D Form of a ship
9 Modelling of 3D Form of a ship
10 Hydrostatic and stability calculations of 3D ship model
11 Resistance and power calculations of 3D ship model
12 Structural analysis and introduction to Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
13 Structural analysis and introduction to Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
14 Hydrodynamics analysis and introduction to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

In case of an excused absence, the student must make-up any missed test or assignement on the following day durin a free peiod, before or after class. Unexcusd absences will result in a zero.

Attendance: Student are required to attend every class. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the each class. Plagiarism: Plagiarism will be reported to Academic Judiciary Board and can result in getting zero on the assignements / exams and failing the course. Late Assignement: All assignements are due at the beginning of the class. The extentions will not be granted. Accommodations: Students are required to let the instructor know any special accommodation needed due to learning disabilities, medical needs, etc.
