Course Objective

The course aims to understand and discuss the concept of user participation in architectural design and to determine users problems and needs by provision of adequate communication methods and targets to transform those outputs into use in a design process. The course whose content should be comprehended in both theoretic and practical means, aims to interpret the theoretical knowledge to practical experience within a media (such as community workshops, participatory design implementations) which brings together the partners and shareholders.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Being able to investigate basic theories and conceptual framework on the concept of participation and to comprehend the relationship between design process and participation in design,
2   Being able to observe and interpret the nature of target groups,
3   Being able to depict the users behaviours and targets in the given area through using analysis techniques, site observations and personal interviews.
4   Being able to criticize and make suggestions on a specific problem/paradigm.
5   Being able to transform proposals on a problem/paradigm into a research paper format.

3 The interaction of participatory action and planning of built-environment and design; the evolution of user based design since 1950 s.
4 Methodologies on Participatory Architectural Design.
5 Participatory Architectural Design and Communication Techniques.
6 Participatory Architecture-Design and Implementations - I -
7 Participatory Architecture-Design and Implementations - II -
8 Student Presentations and Discussing
9 Field Study: Preparation. Assigning the work site/target groups/problem/action plan.
10 Field Study: Awareness Walk. Distributing the communication forms and making interviews.
11 Field Study: Behavioural Targets. The preliminary studies for case studies.
12 Field Study: Participatory Design Studies / Designing the Whole.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will sustain through lectures on theories as well as discussions on students research on the case studies. Students will make a field study and will prepare a final research and a presentation.

Assessment Criteria

The homework and students presentations will be evaluated through the comprehensibility, quality of proposal and quality of presentation and submissions. Participation in class, attendance and contribution to the work will also be taken into consideration.
