Course Objective

The distinct characters of urban environments will be examined with the aim of providing students with an architectural look to the urban . The course will try to pin down the architectural and urban particularities of selected large and small cities and to define their foundations in history, politics, economics, culture, urban planning and building laws. It will look particularly at the different histories of national intervention and local initiatives, as these places gain new importance in regard to the current trends in urban development. The course will then focus on analysis of an urban problem or any urban phenomenon in context of specific approaches where specific or comprehensive findings can be deciphered for different case study areas.

1   To list the major components of design in context of place-making (Knowledge)
2   To describe contemporary urban design and planning developments in regard to local/national/global dynamics (Comprehension)
3   To interprete the spatial design problem through formulation of the conceptual framework and proper design solutions (Application)
4   To analyze all components of holistic design in technical terms (Analysis)
5   To design an urban design project in a comprehensive manner (Implementation).
