Course Objective

The Automated Coastal Engineering System (ACES) is being developed by the Automated Coastal Engineering Group, Research division (RD), Coastal Engineering Research Center (CERC), US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES). This lecture provides a comprehensive environment for applying a broad spectrum of coastal Engineering technology. ACES will be introduced and students will be requested to study some coastal engineering problems using ACES.

2   To gain ability in the field of wave prediction
3   To understand Beta Rayleigh Distribution and Extreme Significant Height Analysis
4   To learn theoretical explanations in Linear Wave Theory
5   To analyze the process of wave transformation
6   To gain ability for breakwater designs
7   To emphasize the importance of vertical breakwater under non breaking waves
8   To learn the design of Rubble Mound Revetment
9   To understand the process of wave run-up, transmission and overtopping
10   To study Longshore Sediment Transport
11   To introduce the knowledge of Numerical Simulation of Time Dependent Beach and Dune Erosion

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is implemented as class presentations and discussion. Attendance and discussions are expected to the lectures, laboratory assignments and oral presentation hours. Grades will be based on exams (Midterm 25%, Final 50%) and term project (25%).
