Course Objective

The aim of this course is to outline the reasons of destruction of morphology, flora, fauna, and, contamination surface and underground water due to surface mining activities for different open-pit types. Moreover, precautions to be taken in order to minimize the level of destruction and contamination will be discussed. After that, methods and techniques of adapting destructed land parts to the natural environment will be given.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to define the terms of reclamation, rehabilitation, restoration, recultivation and to present the differences among them
2   To be able to comment on the importance of Environmental Impact Assessmentin mining and legislations about environmental impact assessment in the world
3   To be able to present the ways of removal and stocking of topsoil in mines
4   To be able to comment on ideal reclamationtechniques in mine sites
5   To be able to discuss on topics related to ground water problems in mines

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to reclamation and surface mining shapes (downhill, uphill, pit mining)
2 Environmental impacts of mining (direct threats to human life, indirect threat to human life, damage given to private property, farm fields, forest and wildlife, threats reducing the life quality of the community etc.)
3 Definitions of reclamation, rehabilitation, restoration, recultivation and necessity of reclamation stage in mining
4 Sustainable development concept in mining and nature restoration concept and stages of nature restoration (land use planning, re-arrangement of the site, remediation, monitoring and maintenance)
5 Legislations about environmental impact assessment in the world and in Türkiye
6 Summary of ideal reclamation studies at mine sites and reshaping of the land (contour cutting, grading), obtaining the necessary slope and site stability
7 Integrating visual impacts into reshaping of the land
8 Mine waste disposal, planning and environmental protection aspects, dump design
9 Dewatering of mine wastes, building waste storage damps, stability of mine waste dumps
10 Mid-Term Exam
11 Reclamation of waterways, channel geometry and geomorphology, channel substrate and sediment
12 Removal and stocking of topsoil, replacement of soil strata, preparation of soil with fertilizers and conditioners, stabilization of soil surface (by biosolids and mulching method)
13 Revegetation of the mined land, selection of appropriate plant types, ordering and storage of suitable seeds
14 Ground water contamination, prevention techniques of ground water contamination by mine water, various reclamation examples from the world and discussions
